The 15th annual Somerset Rail Trail Fun Run was held on Sunday, 9 July 2017 and included a 24km bike ride from Wulkuraka to Fernvale. This new addition saw Somerset Regional Council join forces with Bicycle Queensland to deliver a bicycle component between Wulkuraka and Fernvale.
This annual event, an initiative of Somerset Regional Council, is about enjoying the great outdoors with family, friends or work colleagues and most of all, having fun.
The Somerset Rail Trail Fun Run took place on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail between Lowood and Fernvale while the bicycle leg took place between Wulkuraka and Fernvale.
The running/walking course – an 8km track of disused rail corridor ideal for amateurs, professional athletes, and parents with strollers. The bicycle ride – held from Wulkuraka to Fernvale, also ideal for amateurs, professional athletes, and families that just want to enjoy a gentle ride along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.
Participants had the choice of participating in either an 8km or 3km run between Lowood and Fernvale which allow participants to take in the breathtaking views of the Brisbane Valley, Brisbane River and historic rail trail.
The bicycle ride allowed riders to experience the newly opened Wulkuraka to Fernvale section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail whilst observing the undisturbed nature strip with native vegetation and bird life on display.
